History
The Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur was established in 1951, alongside the inception of the institute. Beginning in the historic Hijli Detention Camp, the department quickly developed a strong foundation in teaching and research under pioneering faculty like Harsha Narayan Bose.
Over the decades, the department expanded its academic programmes and research areas, building expertise across both theoretical and experimental physics. With the establishment of advanced laboratories and research facilities, it has grown into a major center for scientific research and education.
Today, the department continues to contribute significantly to academic excellence, research output, and interdisciplinary initiatives, while adapting to emerging areas of science and technology.
